About this New York tour
Touring New York by bike is not only great exercise, it's great fun. The pace is just right, so you can catch a lot of scenery in a few hours. And scenery is this tour's strong suit.
The show-stealer is the Brooklyn Bridge – which totally deserves its place in the pantheon of epic human endeavors. This magnificent structure took two generations of architects to build. John Augustus Roebling designed it, but died from an injury sustained during prelim site surveys. His son Washington took over, but was himself incapacitated early on from decompression sickness contracted in the underwater caissons. For the next 11 years, he viewed progress from an apartment near the site, relying on his wife Emily to help supervise the mega-project. They got it done, and the bridge opened in 1883. Today, it's as impressive as ever.
The rest of this tour's itinerary is just as impressive: the Williamsburg Bridge, with its jaw-dropping views from a dedicated bike lane. The ramble through tree-shaded Brooklyn Heights, with its pre-Civil War brownstones and spectacular skyline. And the hop over to the Hudson River Park Bikeway at Battery Park, for awesome views of Wall Street, One World Trade Center, and the Statue of Liberty.
If you're not a regular cyclist, don't let that stop you. This trip is led by a local guide experienced at leading mixed groups at a comfortable speed. No riders left behind!
Caution: Elephant Crossing
Six days after President Chester A. Arthur attended the bridge's opening ceremonies in 1883, rumors of an imminent collapse caused a stampede that killed at least 12 people. To help convince the public that the span was safe, famous circus frontman and self-promoter P.T. Barnum had his elephant, Jumbo, lead a procession of 21 elephants across. The bridge held strong. So did his circus's business that season.
