About this New York tour
There may be no place in the city more steeped in myth and romance than the top of the Empire State Building. See Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle, Fay Wray and The Beast in King Kong, Andy Warhol, Looney Tunes, Mythbusters, or any other work of fiction or reality centered on the towering heights of this Art Deco masterpiece.
A trip up to the observatory is your chance to experience the same thrill millions before you have – that delicious quickening of the heart rate as you drink in sweeping views of Manhattan and beyond from a quarter mile up. High-power binoculars are available for a minimal cost, to help you see even more.
Deemed one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the building was erected in a lightning-fast 11 months in 1931 – a triumphant source of hope in the Depression – and stood as the world's tallest building until the World Trade Center topped it in 1970. The Empire State has 2.7 million square feet of floor space, its own zip code, two restaurants, a sushi bar, three coffee shops, and museum-quality architectural detailing throughout.
It's as if your ride up by high-speed elevator also transports you back to when New York stood tall against troubles with style, elegance, and American ingenuity–and one skyscraper towered over, all as the city's inspiring symbol.
Come see why it still inspires, and keep in mind that static electricity is heightened up here too, so don't be surprised if you feel an extra tingle when you kiss a companion.
What floor, please?
On a foggy Saturday morning in 1945, a B-25 military transport flying in zero visibility crashed into the Empire State building's 79th floor. Elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver plunged 75-stories inside her car, still the Guinness Record for longest survived elevator freefall. Amazingly, only 14 died, the fire was under control in just 40 minutes, and the building reopened for business on Monday, 20-foot gash notwithstanding.
The Empire State Building is located at 350 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10018
