About this New York tour
The island of Manhattan is some 32 miles around, if you were to walk it. Once a year, the Shorewalkers Club does exactly that in their Great Saunter. But they're hardcore.
Instead, we suggest investing a few delightful hours doing something very few people can say they've done: circling Manhattan in its entirety, an ideal way to experience the five boroughs, the harbor, New Jersey, and more. From the water, you'll be treated to excellent views of the skyline, parks, neighborhoods, and famous landmarks you've always heard about – along with many others you may not be as familiar with. You'll know them well after this trip, thanks to your local guide's intriguing descriptions and stories. Plus, you'll have great photos to remember them by.
The voyage carries you by Downtown, Midtown, Uptown, West Side, East Side, Harlem, Upper Manhattan, Inwood Hill, the New Jersey Palisades, New York Harbor, and parts of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
Some of the sights you'll view include Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, One World Trade Center, South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, United Nations, Roosevelt Island, Gracie Mansion, Yankee Stadium, George Washington Bridge, Grant's Tomb, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, the USS Intrepid, Chelsea Piers, Fort Tryon and the Cloisters, Grant's Tomb, and the Little Red Lighthouse.
Come along on this trip and get a fine feel for Manhattan's special relationship with its surrounding waterways, and with no aching feet.
The sawing off of Manhattan Island
New Yorkers think themselves a cynical bunch, but they may have been more gullible two centuries ago, when a rumor spread that Lower Manhattan was sinking. A retired ship's carpenter named Lozier said he'd organize a crew to slice off the southern tip, tow it out, turn it around, then reattach it to solid uptown ground. But on the big day, he was a no-show, and supposedly hid out in Brooklyn for months. The story has never been confirmed, but it's fun to think about Lozier laughing it up in his Brooklyn hideaway.
