About this New York tour
Enter the world of the legendary drama The Sopranos. It's no accident that every episode of the iconic series and this tour begins with an exodus from New York City to the urban jungle of New Jersey. When veteran TV writer David Chase was tasked with creating a new series about the mob, he specifically chose his native New Jersey as the setting, for this was no epic Godfather tale of the Five Families of the Cosa Nostra, but a gritty, realistic portrayal of an authentic mob family.
On your visit to the series' famous sites, gritty and realistic is what you're going to get. Like the Lodi, New Jersey strip club Satin Dolls, "home of the original Bada Bing," whose real-life owner Anthony Cardinalle was the subject of a federal investigation for racketeering and extortion for conspiring with local mobsters posing as you guessed it "sanitation consultants." There will be no sets or soundstages on this tour. These places are the real deal.
It's no wonder: much of the story for The Sopranos may have been based on the little-known DeCalvacante crime family, whose criminal operations took place in the very areas of New Jersey where the series, and your tour, take place. An FBI wiretap of these aspiring mafiosi once captured the mobsters discussing the series, praising characters and performances for their authenticity. At one point, a mobster is even heard to ask about the series: "Is this supposed to be us?" After this experience, you might just be tempted to watch the entire series again, just to see the scenes of the iconic, real sights you will see on this tour.
"And in the end, you're completely alone with it all.
The dark path of Tony Soprano was enough to drive its star, the late James Gandolfini, to buckle under the pressures of the role numerous times. On one instance in January 2002, the larger-than-life actor even went missing from the set for three days before turning up in a Brooklyn beauty salon to call the only number he could remember, The Sopranos' production office to ask for a car to take him home.
