About this New York tour
Hundreds of years ago, an English sea captain piloted his ship up a river in the New World, searching for passage to Asia. Little did he know that his voyage would leave him marooned in the hostile wilderness by his mutinying crew, and that future generations would call the river by his name: Hudson.
In what was little more than a land grab, Hudson's native England seized upon the river's discovery by an Englishman in order to claim it for themselves (even though Hudson's expedition had in fact been financed by the Dutch). And yet it was this very river that would prove their undoing in 1776, when the UK's Royal Navy received a thrashing from American cannons at Governor's Island and Battery Park, both sights you will see on your tour. This decisive defense later allowed a rebel general to retreat safely across the river after the largest battle in the Revolutionary War... and ultimately become the first president of the United States.
You may appreciate the history of this unstoppable river as you cruise its waters, admiring the breathtaking skyline of New York City. But enjoy the sights while you can: satellite data shows that the island of Manhattan is buckling under the weight of its skyline, its coastline receding twice as fast as the rest of the world. That's right: the river that gave the world one of its greatest cities may one day take it back.
A two-way stream
Hudson may have loaned his name to the river that ushered him to his death, but the native Lenape tribe had their own name: the river that flows both ways. The reason is that the Hudson River, which is actually a tidal estuary, has the peculiar status of a waterway that is part inland river and part ocean, meaning that it has two tides each day, saltwater in some places and freshwater in others, and a current that alternates between North and South.
