Niagara Falls, New York, USA
- Maid of the Mist: For more than 150 years, this Niagara institution has been bringing visitors drenchingly close to the pounding cascades of all three falls.
- Cave of the winds: Don a souvenir poncho and descend 175 feet into the Gorge, fighting mighty gusts of wind just feet from the powerful torrents. Hope you don't mind getting wet.
- Observation tower: Soak in astounding panoramic views of the falls from 300 feet in the air atop this soaring stronghold of aluminum, glass, and steel.
About this Niagara Falls tour
The Niagara River's flow from Lake Erie up north through Lake Ontario creates one of the most impressive examples of the Earth's power that humans will ever see. For 12,000 years this geographic titan has reigned over the Niagara Gorge by pushing millions of cubic feet of water through it in a matter of seconds.
Welcome to Niagara Falls. Though the steady, hypnotic rush of the water and the glint of sunlight reflected off the mist might captivate you, there's no time to dawdle. You're heading down into the belly of the beast: Niagara Gorge where the wooden walkways at the Cave of the Winds will take you just 20 feet away from the powerful, rushing force of the Bridal Veil Falls.
But there are three colossal waterfalls to observe here, and aboard the Maid of the Mist you'll cruise by them all, on a classic tour that everyone from Princess Diana to the Jonas Brothers has been on. Plain and simple: If you haven't experienced the spray of the falls, the gleaming rainbows and the crashing sound of water colliding into rock aboard the Maid of the Mist, you haven't really seen Niagara Falls.
These falls have captivated the imaginations of people of all ages for centuries, and it's easy to see why when you're hundreds of feet in the sky looking down on their mighty form at the top of the Observation Tower.
In addition to being a great value, seeing the Falls from every perspective on this tour is a great reminder that, although often placid, Mother Nature will always be capable of dazzling displays of sheer power that remind us of our place on her planet.
Words of wisdom
At 167 feet in the air and with currents that reach nearly 70 mph, it's illegal (and not real smart) to try to go over the rushing waters of Niagara Falls. But of course, several have tried. Use of the traditional vessel for getting over the falls, a wooden barrel, began back in 1901 when daredevil Annie Edson Taylor made the plunge. Edson's advice to potential copycats after she survived the drop? "No one ought to ever do that again." Well put.
