About this San Diego, California Tour
Segways are no longer the vehicle of choice strictly for the mall security guard crowd. These smooth operators are also the preferred mode of transportation to discover three of San Diego's famed neighborhoods. So learn how to ride, then follow your knowledgeable, local guide for an entertaining and informative spin around the Gaslamp Quarter, Bayfront area, and Embarcadero.
The architecture of past and present blend harmoniously in San Diego's upscale Gaslamp Quarter, just as the area's lifestyle venues and cultural attractions mix with a variety of pubs, clubs, restaurants, and boutiques alongside museums, art galleries, theaters, and symphony halls. Your guide will lead you through the 16-block neighborhood, making sure to hit all the high notes.
As California's third largest naturally protected harbor, San Diego Bay is a sailor's paradise. Whizzing past the bayfront on your handy Segway, you'll see proof of this in the throng of pleasure boats and yachts scenically bobbing on the water. It's no wonder one inlet was named the America's Cup Harbor in recognition of San Diego Bay'sdistinguished role as host of the prestigious sailing event from 1988 to 1995.
Keep your Segway rolling because you'll also navigate the wide boardwalk that meanders through the Spanish-name bearingEmbarcadero. Top attractions dotting this three-mile waterfront district include the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the USS Midway Museum, the Maritime Museum of San Diego, and the Greatest Generation Collection of military art. Your guide will zip you to as many of these sights as time allows, so ondela (hurry)!
The Gaslamp Quarter snuffs out its red light past
Don't let the highbrow, National Register of Historic Places-listed Gaslamp Quarter fool you. This district has a darker past than most. From the 1880s to 1916, the area was called the Stingaree, named for the stingray that lurked in nearby San Diego Bay. But those stinging sea creatures weren't the only dangerous characters around. Gamblers, prostitutes, drug pushers, and other criminals took up residence here and ran the region, blatantly indulging in their vices.
