About this San Diego, California tour

It all begins with a floating bus (or a boat with wheels, if you prefer) – a crazy amphibious hybrid of a vehicle called a hydra-terra. And there's no better way to dive into a seaport town like San Diego.

We stick to the roads at first, telling you all about the city as we drive around the waterfront across from Coronado, seeing the sights and learning about the people who helped make San Diego the city it is today.

Then we take the plunge into the bay at Shelter Island, cruising past Point Loma, home to the Naval Air Station North Island, Point Loma Submarine Base, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and the Navy's marine mammal training center. Yes, this is definitely a proud military town – even sea creatures do their duty.

Back on dry land, board the Old Town Trolley, a fun-filled ride that loops around the city. If you stay aboard for the whole two-hour tour, you'll learn all about San Diego's Spanish settlers, naval history, fishing, surfing, Chargers, and Padres. You'll see old towns, new towns, beaches, marine parks, walk-around parks, ships, sailors, zoos, beaches, and fishermen. You'll cross bridges to Coronado and the Gaslamp Quarter, find the best spots for shopping, and be tempted by the aromas of Little Italy.

The trolley has 11 stops, and you can hop off at any time, see the sights, and then hop back on again. As often as you like. It's the best way to see San Diego: by land, sea, and rail.

Let's build one for the Gipper

Though it had been in the works since 1926, the bridge that connects San Diego to Coronado wasn't built until 1967. It took two years, 20,000 tons of steel, and 94,000 cubic yards of concrete to complete. When it opened to traffic on August 3, 1969 – the 200th anniversary of San Diego's founding – the first person to drive over the bridge was Ronald Reagan, then governor of California.
