About this San Francisco, California tour
Aquarium of the Bay, located on the waterfront, provides you with close encounters of the marine kind. There are three main parts to the attraction: Discover the Bay, Under the Bay, and Touch the Bay; all entertaining and enlightening. There are dozens of free-with-admission programs, plus the 270-seat Bay Theater that shows topical nature films.
Start your visit with Discover the Bay. Eight exhibits feature over 1,000 aquatic animals. The "Beauties of the Bay" exhibit showcases some of the most colorful fish in the Bay Area, including the bright orange Garibaldi fish. And how about that school of anchovies moving in unison? They aren't just a pizza topping. Explore an incredible array of marine life and the distinctive ecosystems that support them.
In Under the Bay, the Aquarium's most iconic habitat, you'll walk through 300 feet of crystal clear tunnels as marine life swims around and above you. There is even a jellies habitat, showing the variety of jellyfish in the Bay Area. All four local types of shark are here; sevengills, soupfin sharks, leopard sharks, and spiny dogfish. And you won't want to miss the giant Pacific octopus, Pacific sea nettles, and utterly adorable river otters.
In Touch the Bay, bat rays, big skates, leopard sharks, swell sharks, and other ocean animals are within arms' reach. And here's a twist for an aquarium: land-dwellers like snakes, skinks, and tarantulas help tell the story in an exhibit about climate change. Your day at the Aquarium of the Bay is sure to inspire both conversation and conservation.
The Katy Perry of the sea
Pop singer Katy Perry is known for hit songs like Roar and I Kissed a Girl, as well as for her many costume changes during her concerts. When she performs Hot and Cold, she switches her outfits eight times in that one song. The Giant Pacific Octopus, one of the many sea animals at the Aquarium of the Bay, acts a little like that. It can change colors in fractions of a second, blending into the scenery, or wearing pink the way Katy does.
Please make your way to the Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, The Embarcadero and Beach Streets, San Francisco, CA 94133.
