About this San Francisco, California tour
San Francisco is known as the City by the Bay. And being by a bay means being near bridges. The two most iconic bridges in San Francisco are the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. This Bridge 2 Bridge cruise shows you both of these bridges up close and personal, as well as San Francisco's most popular attractions.
You may remember from geography class that the Golden Gate Bridge connects Marin County with the San Francisco peninsula, and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, nicknamed the Bay Bridge, connects the city with Oakland. So the tour gives you a great view of the entire Bay Area waterfront. Sail under both the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges twice.
The cruise begins and ends at Fisherman's Wharf. As the Red and White Fleet boat sails past Treasure Island (once home of the World's Fair), Alcatraz (once home of some of the most notorious crooks in the country) and San Francisco neighborhoods like North Beach (once home of the great Joe DiMaggio), listen to facts and fun trivia through your headset about what you are seeing. For example, did you know that San Francisco's first name was Yerba Buena, meaning "Good Herb"? Given the city's importance in the hippie movement, that name is even more fitting!
Other sights in the tour include AT&T Park, where the San Francisco Giants play, the art deco Coit Tower in Telegraph Hill, legendary Sausalito, and Angel Island State Park. You can purchase food on the boat, or bring in a boxed lunch for this daytime cruise. The last cruise of the day has a Happy Hour with drink specials. And when you return to shore, watch out for the barking sea lions as you exit the boat.
Orange you glad?
The Golden Gate Bridge is well known for its pleasing orange color, officially named International Orange. But if the U.S. Navy had had their way when the bridge was being constructed in the 1930s, it would have sported a bumble bee yellow-and-black paint job to enhance its visibility. As it turns out, the primer for the bridge was in that orange, and Irving Morrow, the bridge's consulting architect, suggested that it stay that color. Phew!
