About this San Francisco, California tour
If you want to experience the City by the Bay, start on the Bay.
The big boats of the Red and White Fleet let you experience the city in its totality. You understand where everything fits – how the pieces come together to create not just a collection of memorable sights, but a place that's as much a state of mind as a physical location. That's why this cruise has been going strong for over three-quarters of a century now.
Headphone narration in a dozen languages provides fascinating context behind San Francisco's people and places. So you don't just see Maritime Park, you understand how the historic ships there shaped the city and affected the life of the whole country.
It's the same with everything else you'll see, from Alcatraz Island, harsh outpost of exile, to free-spirited Sausalito, the towering Transamerica pyramid, and the rolling hills of the Presidio. You don't just see. You understand. And in a town with so very much to see, that makes all the difference.
Escape From the Rock
During Alcatraz's nearly three decades of operation, there were 14 escape attempts by a total of 36 prisoners. Because of its location and strong bay currents, only two attempts might have been successful. In 1937 two prisoners jumped into the bay waters and were never heard from again. Decades later it's believed that John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris may have escaped in 1962. The prisoners' families claim that they periodically receive postcards with handwriting that looks distinctly familiar…
