About this Seward, Alaska Tour
Welcome to more than a thousand square miles of spectacular national park. We may call Kenai Fjords a "park," but for the wildlife that lives here, it's a vast, natural playground. Dozens of creatures thrive in its icy waters and along its rugged shores. As the stars of this cruise, they create a spellbinding open-air show. So step out on the deck, feel that fresh air sharpen your senses, and open your eyes. Wide.
You might see playful Dall's porpoises tagging right along with our vessel. They seem to revel in being the planet's fastest small cetacean (they can swim over 30 miles per hour) get a kick out of zigzagging around the boat and riding its wake. You'll also get an up-close look at frisky otters (they like to float on their backs and use their tummies as a table for food) and check out what the sea lions and seals are up to.
Along the way, we'll watch as orcas, humpbacks, and other whale species put on a show around the boat. Their performance includes spouting, plus some amazing moves like breaching, lunging, spyhopping, lobtailing, and slapping. Are they playing, feeding, or checking you out? Count on your ranger-guide to explain all this spirited behavior. Just know we can't count on keeping you 100 spray-free during a really big show!
The backdrop for this lively action are the magnificent fjords that inspired the park's name. Hear how they were sculpted by dozens of glaciers flowing from the ice field that crowns the park's interior. See Bear Glacier, the largest of them all with its 12-mile ice tongue. And gaze up the park's highest point. So far, this 6,450-foot peak is unnamed. But, who knows, this cruise may inspire you to label this pinnacle of wild beauty.
Faster than a speeding schoolbus…
Well, not quite, but orca whales speed through water at up to 35 miles per hour. That's fast for a creature that grows almost as long as a school bus and, at six tons, weighs in like a small bus. More hugely fun facts about orcas: calves are born into their watery world weighing as much as 350 pounds and adults' brains tip the scale at up to 15 pounds. Scientists think this explains why orcas may just be the world's savviest predator.
