About this Skagway, Alaska tour
All aboard! Find your seat in a vintage parlor car and settle in for an exciting expedition. You're riding the rails with White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR), the railway that symbolizes adventure, pioneering – and triumph over challenge.
It took tens of thousands of men and 450 tons of explosives to overcome a harsh climate and challenging terrain to create this railway during the Klondike Gold Rush. Initially considered an impossible task, the WP&YR was literally blasted through coastal mountains in just 26 months. (Perhaps dreams of gold rushed the task?) Now, more than a century later, you relive every hard-won mile of this triumph.
You'll climb a 2,865-foot elevation in just 20 miles. Get ready for the thrill of cliff-hanging turns, steep grades, shadowy tunnels, and numerous crossings over bridges and trestles. Prepare for breathtaking panoramas among the mountains and see the original Klondike Trail of '98 worn into the rocks, a permanent tribute to the thousands who passed this way in search of their fortune.
The WP&YR was vital during the gold rush, and it continued to be a lifeline in this area until a highway was completed in 1982. Then the railway closed and it seemed like the end of the line. But visitors like you still longed to travel Alaska the authentic way. Optimistically, WP&YR reopened in 1988, carrying 35,000 passengers its first year. It now has more business than it had back when it was carrying miners to the Klondike. For this little railroad, the glory days – and gold rush – are back.
Trains, planes, and paddlewheelers
The White Pass & Yukon Route was a full-on transportation company, operating stage coaches, sleighs, buses, paddlewheelers, trucks, ships, airplanes, and hotels. But the narrow gauge railroad endures as its most famous accomplishment. It's now a designated International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, an honor shared with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower, and the Statue of Liberty.
