About this Tampa, Florida tour
Swim with fishes? Dive with sharks? Play with penguins? Adventures galore await marine animal lovers at the Florida Aquarium.
Come face to face with sharks, moray eels, a barracuda, and a green sea turtle in the Coral Reef tank, a unique opportunity for certified SCUBA divers, ages 15 and older. Or snorkel on the shallow end, perfect for ages six and up to experience reef life glide past moray eels, prickly porcupine fish, and colorful surgeon fish.
You can also encounter Australian sea dragons in the Coral Reef gallery. Named for their resemblance to the mythical dragon, these delicate creatures are not the fire-breathing type. Featuring both leafy and weedy varieties, "Dragons Down Under" showcases their unusual beauty, which unfortunately makes them a target for collectors.
Keeping your hands to yourself is strongly discouraged at Stingray Beach where you can touch a variety of stingrays and sharks, including white-spotted bamboo sharks, coral catsharks, southern rays, and blue-spotted rays. The No Bones Zone features mollusks, anemones, sea stars, and many more slippery suckers for you to feel.
Get a "backstage pass" to interact with South African black-footed penguins, and have a chance to touch their smooth skin. You'll pick up fascinating facts about these flightless wonders also known as the "jackass" penguin. Ahem, named for the donkey-like sound they make, not because of a less-than-stellar attitude.
With a new experience and new creature around every corner, it's easy to see why the aquarium is among the world's best.
Committed to conservation
The aquarium's conservation and research efforts are just as exciting as their exhibits. It focuses on scientific research, animal rescue, rehabilitation, and release back to the wild for marine animals. Two of those include endangered sea turtles and injured or orphaned river otters, both essential contributors to their habitats. The crew also assists with dolphin and manatee rescues and contributes to studies assessing and advancing the health of Florida's ecosystems.
