About this Washington DC tour
Climb aboard an updated version of one of World War II's most interesting byproducts: the DUKW amphibious boat/truck hybrid, first designed by General Motors in 1942 as a way to transport troops and supplies to shore.
Though U.S. military officials were at first reluctant to incorporate the DUKW into their battle plans, these unique vehicles eventually saw plenty of action in the Pacific theater, on the shores of Sicily, and during the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
They proved to be great at ferrying soldiers and supplies, but you'll find that this duck is also excellent for helping you experience the tradition and history of the nation's capital as you head down the wide avenues of the District and into the Potomac River.
From the elegant neoclassical architecture of the presidential memorials to the panoramic views of Virginia across the water, the fascinating sights of the nation's capital glide past like water off a duck's back.
The mighty Duck
The original DUKW design was considered impractical and was widely criticized by military leaders. However, an early prototype of the vehicle that happened to be in Massachusetts proved instrumental in the rescue of a Coast Guard boat stranded on a sandbar off Provincetown. Bad weather prevented traditional craft from reaching the stranded sailors, but the DUKW handled the job with ease, silencing doubters.
Please make your way to Union Station at 50 Massachusetts Ave NEWashington DC 20001.
Please check in at least 30 minutes prior to boarding or your seats may be released. Ducks are closed during the Fall and Winter Seasons (November to March). Ducks do not operate on National Marathon Day, Sunday of Memorial Day, Independence Day, or Marine Corps Marathon.
Whilst there is not much walking involved, you must be able to get on and off the vehicle without assistance or with the aid of a traveling companion.
