About this Washington DC tour
More than anything else, the monument complex around the National Mall of Washington, D.C., stands for hope.
Hope for the success of a brash young country born out of rebellion against a global superpower. Hope for a repaired union after four years of bloody fighting between countrymen. Hope for equality for all races after centuries of oppression. Hope for the success of men and women in uniform, fighting for American ideals all over the world.
Lit up like beacons against the dark backdrop of the night sky, you'll be able to more closely explore testaments to the American spirit like the stark granite walls of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the triumph of the Marines at Iwo Jima, and the tenacious will of president Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Take the time to listen to the narration provided by your helpful tour guide so that you have a historical context for these monuments, but make sure to pause for a moment to take in the symbolism. In the darkness around you is the legacy of the men, women, and organizations responsible for making America what it is today. When you understand this, you'll truly know what these monuments represent.
Legend holds that the Capitol was once so infested with rats that officials released a group of cats in the building for pest control. Though the caretakers soon switched to a more modern extermination method, one cat is said to remain: A demonic feline spirit, capable of growing as big as a tiger. Sightings of the demon cat have often come before major transitions, such as the stock market crash of 1929 and President Kennedy's assassination.
