About this Adelaide Tour
Welcome to one of the world's great wine regions. If you're craving an intense, full-bodied Shiraz or a fresh, crisp Riesling, you can try these stars of the Barossa among the vineyards that produce them, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Semillon, and more. This is a mecca for wine lovers, so get ready to swirl, sip, and repeat.
Wine has been a way of life in the Barossa since the mid 1800s, when Europeans settled the area and planted cuttings brought from their homelands. In this lush valley, the Australian sun and soil grew the settlers' vines into a major industry. Today, more than 750 grape-growing families nurture the vineyards, many of them tended by sixth generations.
As you tour the Barossa, you'll also get a taste of its heritage. Jacob's Creek was established by an immigrant from Bavaria who planted the valley's first commercial vineyard in 1847. And Saltram Wine Estate started when English settler William Salter purchased land here in 1844. Since then, the German and British and their descendants have prospered together and created the distinctive character of the valley.
You'll have time to immerse yourself in more than 175 years of German heritage at Hahndorf. Stroll the main street to admire fachwerk, a traditional architectural style with timber framing and infill panels. Sample the local beer or wine, and raise your glass to the spirit of those early settlers. They tilled the soil and began the traditions that create the flavors you enjoy today.
Home sweet hollow
The inside of an old red gum tree made a fine first home for Friedreich Herbig when he arrived from Prussia in 1855. Soon he took his 18-year-old bride Caroline to live in the tree, and their first two children were born there. After that, the couple had to branch out to larger digs as their family expanded to 16 children. No one inhabits the hollow trunk today, but the Herbig family regularly gathers for reunions at their ancestral treehouse.
