About this Adelaide Tour
The heart of the Fleurieu Peninsula is its passionate people who carry on the spirit of those who settled here. As you travel through this pretty landscape, you'll encounter heritage sights, century-old flavors, and experiences that invite you to savor Fleurieu's earthy appeal and unhurried pace. Don't think twice about this invitation. Just say "yes."
When Strathalbyn was established in the 19thcentury, residents set about linking their town by horse tram to Goolwa and Victor Harbor. Our drive along scenic roads is swifter, but when we reach Victor Harbor, you can experience the nostalgia of slower travel. A magnificent Clydesdale pulls a heritage tram across the causeway to Granite Island. You could walk, but a ride on the Southern Hemisphere's only horse-drawn tram is a rare treat.
In the historic river port of Goolwa, steamboats once navigated Murray River and moved goods to and from Port Elliot. A few iconic river boats, including the world's only wood-fired paddle steamer, still take visitors on outings. Your guide can tell you all about this river's traditions and the famous whaling days along the coast. (You may even learn how Goolwa got its unusual name.)
McLaren Vale's industrious settlers planted vineyards in the 1830s, and today the region is dotted with dozens of cellar doors, mostly small family operations. On main street, the shopkeepers are ready with samples of the region's bold reds and local cheeses. Again, just say "yes." Every flavor of the Fleurieu Peninsula is an authentic taste of its heritage.
Meet the petite penguin
Granite Island and other rocky spots on Australia's southern shore are home to Eudyptula minor, the smallest penguin on the planet. These tiny guys stand just 12 to 13 inches tall and weigh about 3.3 pounds. (Their Antarctic cousin, the emperor penguin, averages about 66 pounds and 3.8 feet tall.) Little penguins pack about 10,000 blue downy feathers on their mini bodies and have wee pink feet with black soles. Get your camera ready!
