About this Alice Springs Tour
In Palm Valley, the desert blooms. Here in a rugged outback landscape, the Finke River runs quietly and spring-fed pools serenely reflect the endless sky. Thousands of rare red cabbage palms thrive here, a lush cluster of green amongst the gorges and towering rocks.
An oasis is a magical place. And the lore here has its mysteries too. The palms were once thought to be the only species to survive when Australia's tropical interior began to dry out millions of years ago. Scientists now believe they came when indigenous people settled here15,000 years ago, perhaps bringing them as food (the leaf buds can be eaten like cabbage). Aboriginal legend holds that gods from the north brought palm seeds to the valley.
However they took root, the palms and the landscape inspired Albert Namatjira (1902-1959), a watercolorist born at the Hermannsburg community we'll visit. Combining natural talent with keen observation of Palm Valley, Namatjira painted expressive watercolors and pioneered what's now called the Hermannsburg School of Painting. As the first Aboriginal to become a successful professional painter, he is the pride of this small community.
Wandering the gallery here, you'll see paintings that strikingly depict the surrounding outback landscapes. You'll also see the sculptural, colorfully decorated terracotta pots that are crafted mostly by the women of the community. You can sense the inspiration here and the spiritual connection artists feel with this place. The beauty of Palm Valley speaks through the hearts and hands of its artists.
The Arrernte have lived in and around Alice Springs for as long as 20,000 years and are Australia's second-largest indigenous group. In Aboriginal mythology, Dreamtime or The Dreaming was a time when ancestral beings created their world, its people, and its way of life. Sacred to the Arrernte is a great lizard ancestor, and they believe that rock formations and water pools mark the places where the lizard shaped their landscape.
