About this Ayers Rock Tour
The outback teases us with an impossible quandary. What's more magical, seeing Uluru at sunrise or sunset? There's only one answer: stay and witness them both. See morning's flaming glow of orange and red and be enchanted with evening's calming and mystical tones. If ever there was a place to linger, it is here in Australia's Red Centre.
Day or night, Uluru steals the spotlight in this World Heritage site. And Uluru is massive. Soaring more than 1,100 feet above the desert, it's taller than the Eiffel Tower or NYC's Chrysler building. Walking completely around it is a long six-mile trek. (We'll cover the highlights on a drive, with a comfortable walk thattakes in the best views and top sights).
Nearby Kata Tjuta is also impressive and even taller, with its highest pointreaching almost 1,800 feet. Geologists theorize that this crop of dramatic rock domes was once a monolith that surpassed Uluru but, over time, winds and weather eroded it into figurative shapes (Kata Tjuta means "Many Heads" in the Anangu language). Wander among them and take your place in this massive and spellbinding desert gathering.
The magnitude of Uluru and Kata Tjuta is astounding, as is the depth of their meaning. For thousands of years, they have been sacred to the Anangu people, and you'll understand why as your guide shares traditional legends and the stories depicted in ancient rock paintings. You may also see local people singing, dancing, or creating art with time-honored dot painting. Here in the Red Centre, the sun rises and sets on a vibrant cultural landscape, a land where heritage is alive and strong.
To climb or not to climb?
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is owned by the Anangu, who manage it jointly with Parks Australia. They invite you to walk in their ancestors' steps and open your heart to their culture. But they politely request that visitors not climb Uluru because the path is sacred and reserved for special occasions. Many visitors climb it anyway. But walking the base (as we do on this visit)respects their wishes. Reason enough to take the low road.
