      About This Brisbane Tour

Welcome to Brisbane, the capital of Queensland – a sunny, carefree metropolis that has earned its reputation as "Australia's new world city." As you crisscross the winding Brisbane River, you'll soak up the sights and get a local perspective on the best places for shopping, dining, and good times. You'll quickly get swept up in the fun vibe of this multi-faceted destination as you make like a kangaroo and hop on and off the big red double-decker buses.

And speaking of Australia's national animal, one of the most popular stops will be City Lookout, where you'll get the real "big picture" of Brisbane from above Kangaroo Point Cliffs. Mother Nature granted Brisbane a wealth of great vista points, and this one is a keeper. Be sure to learn how to use the panorama feature on your phone before you stop.

Convicts mining the volcanic rock created the cliffs at Kangaroo Point, which are included on Australia's Heritage List. Stone from the cliffs was used to build another monument to convict labor on the tour – the Old Windmill, a "folly" with a particularly brutal history. No joke, no wind, and no leniency for good behavior. Thankfully, Brisbane is now bursting with infectious Aussie good cheer – a quality you'll appreciate as you explore the city's diverse neighborhoods.

      Behind bars on Queen Street

The vibrant Queen Street Mall plays host to 700 retailers, 1,000+ annual events, and over 26 million visitors per year. It's hard to imagine that this trendy scene was the site of barracks for up to 1,000 convicts from 1827-1830. In a central archway was a "flogging triangle," which was certainly a deterrent for any bad behavior behind bars. Happily, the bars on Queen Street are now wine bars.
