Australia Zoo: Wildlife Adventure On Steve Irwin Way
- Crocoseum: Visit this area to see serious wildlife action. This show, featuring crocodiles of course, was Steve Irwin's vision. The ancient animals live in clear water ponds that show how they move in the wild.
- Cuddly koalas: These cute creatures eat eucalyptus leaves and sleep 20 hours a day. Pet the furry friends in the Koala Walkthrough and watch them in the zoo's show.
- Roo Heaven: When you think Australia, you think kangaroos; they're even on the country's national emblem. Here you can get up close to feed the hopping animals.
- Bindi's Island: One of the newer attractions, this features an amazing three-story treeho
About this Brisbane Tour
Crikey! Australia Zoo is a privately owned zoo that is one of the best-known animal parks in the world, thanks to reality television. The zoo, then known as Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park, was founded in 1970 by husband-and-wife wildlife experts Bob and Lyn Irwin. Their son Steve was a natural with the animals, catching his first venomous snake when he was 6.
Yes, this is the same Steve Irwin who grew up to be the Crocodile Hunter. But Irwin didn't just entertain with his filmed animal adventures; he was an important figure in wildlife conservation, and used money from his TV shows to grow the zoo. Irwin tragically died in 2006 after getting stung by a stingray while snorkeling. Today, his wife Terri, along with children Bindi (named after one of his favorite crocodiles) and Robert carry on his legacy.
The Australia Zoo naturally features Australia's most well-known animals, from crocs to koalas to kangaroos. But it also showcases other amazing animals from throughout the world. The Tiger Temple, built to represent a Southeast Asian temple, allows beautiful tigers the ability to roam and even swim. Seeing those elegant cats up close is breathtaking.
The zoo, which has expanded to 1,500 astonishing acres, has Irwin's imprint in most of the exhibits. Irwin wanted the zoo to have an African Safari Park as part of the zoo, where the animals get to roam free while the people watch them. He also created the Australian Zoo's Wildlife Hospital, which treats hurt animals from throughout Australia and gets them back in action. Not only is the zoo fascinating, but its work is a living, breathing tribute to Irwin.
Honeymoon in (croc) paradise
Irwin and his wife Terri were a match made in zoo heaven. They met and fell in love at the Australia Zoo in 1991. He was running the zoo by then, and she was an American naturalist visiting Australia to see its wildlife exhibits. They spent their honeymoon engaged in a crocodile rescue mission that became the first episode of The Crocodile Hunter.
Please make your own way to the Australia Zoo.
Take extra precautions to avoid too much exposure to the sun. Even on cloudy days, the UV is stronger than you may think.
