Great Barrier Reef Deluxe Helicopter Tour

      Cairns, Australia
      From (USD) $382 Per Person
      Highlights
      • Private helicopter tour: Take off from a city-central heliport. Ideal when time is limited, the tour gives you the "big picture" of this World Heritage-listed site.
      • Arlington Reef: Spy turtles and schools of fish as you glide over this shallow and vividly hued coral reef. This is the Great Barrier Reef experience at its best!
      • Island and cay sightings: Watch for landmasses on your flight. Tours usually fly over Green Island, lush with rainforest, and the pristine and sandy Vlasoff Cay.
      About this Cairns Tour

Fact: the Great Barrier is larger than the Great Wall of China. Fact: the Great Barrier Reef is roughly half the size of Texas. Fact: More than 1, 500 fish species live on the reef. Fact: the Great Barrier Reef is the only living thing on earth that is visible from space. It's little wonder the Great Barrier Reef is on so many people's bucket list!

You could spout facts about the Great Barrier Reef all day, but your 40-minute flight is your chance to gaze in utter amazement as this seventh wonder of the world undulates beneath you. The beauty of a helicopter tour is that you can view the reef from a distance (to appreciate its enormity) and in closer proximity (to delight in sightings of its diverse marine life).

Once your flight takes off from Cairns, your pilot will direct your attention to points of interest, like Green Island and Vlasoff Cay. As the helicopter makes its loop, you'll hover over Arlington Reef, a shallow area full of soft corals and teeming with activity. Be on the lookout for turtles, dolphins, and, from May to September, whales. Okay, one more fact: more than 30 species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises have been sighted here.

      Whale tales

The inspiration for movies, songs, and that American classic you'd like to say you actually read, whales are among Earth's most majestic and misunderstood creatures. Fact: they're mammals, not fish. From May to September, the Great Barrier Reef becomes the humpback whale's "baby nursery." In these protected waters, their population over five decades has grown from about 500 to more than 10,000. Now that's a whale of a tale.
