About This Darwin Tour
Yes, it's named after the famed evolutionist/naturalist Charles Darwin. And the city itself has had a fascinating evolution – an exciting gold rush, devastating World War II bombings, and a city-leveling cyclone. You can explore all this heritage, plus attractions like saltwater crocs, amazing aboriginal art, and cosmopolitan pleasures.
How to do it all in Darwin? No worries. Just hop on board one of our double-decker buses and enjoy the flexibility and freedom to follow your whims, from art to zoology.
Feel like a walk on the wild side? Hop off at Doctors Gully to feed the tropical fish, or at Crocosaurus Cove to see the largest crocs in captivity, as well as stingrays, turtles, barramundi, and more than 70 species of reptiles. If you're feeling really wild, jump in the Cage of Death and into the depths among the huge crocs. You'll hop back on the bus feeling just like Crocodile Dundee.
If you're curious about Darwin's heritage, hop off at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory to sample the area's rich indigenous past, explore maritime history, or relive Cyclone Tracy, complete with wildly raging sound effects. Immerse yourself in more of Darwin's turbulent past at the Military Museum as you experience the traumatic days of the 1942 bombing of Darwin, often called "Australia's Pearl Harbor."
After all this excitement, you may want to hop off for a quiet stroll along scenic Lameroo Beach or find yourself a seat in a sidewalk cafe. Quaff something cold and calming as you check out the city's cosmopolitan side. With more than 50 nationalities calling Darwin home, this is a great spot just to watch the world go by.
The beagle has landed
Actually it sailed in and dropped anchor. In 1839, the HMS Beagle, made famous by evolutionist Charles Darwin, discovered the harbor. The captain and ship surveyor named it after Darwin (who wasn't onboard) because the sandstone here reminded them of their geologically minded former shipmate. The town, founded in 1869 and called Palmerston, was renamed Darwin in 1911. And that's how this city's name evolved.
Please make your way to the Tourist Information Centre, corner of Smith St and Bennett St, 6 Bennett St, Darwin NT 0800, Australia.
