Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) Admission & Ferry

      Hobart, Australia
      From (USD) $36 Per Person
      Highlights
      • A new (and old) icon: Unveiled in 2011 after a $75 million revamp, this attraction succeeds the Moorilla Museum of Antiquities, on the Moorilla Estate winery site.
      • Internationally significant: With hundreds on display, this is Hobart's must-see showcase of the world's ultimate controversial compilation of art and antiquities.
      • Fantastic voyage: Admire the view on a high-speed ferry ride from the waterfront, up the River Derwent, to the Berriedale peninsula, and right to MONA's steps.
      About this Hobart Tour

Riddle us this. What do you get when you cross a profoundly offbeat curiosity, an unrepentant flair for the dark and disorienting, and a super-rich gambler's income? One word: "MONA." Add to that, infinite odds on appreciating creative genius in novel ways. Venture inside what Tasmanian owner, millionaire David Walsh, calls his "subversive adult Disneyland." What would you expect from a dude who named his cat "Christ?"

His own bio says that he's, well, a slang name for a male body part because "he feels like it." You can imagine how well it went over with the more conformist art community when he dared, "Working with artists is just like working with human beings, only they're not as smart." In this labyrinth, free your own mind utterly, thanks to Walsh's unapologetic, unconventional, and challenging curatorial style.

Wander 400+ artistic works from his private collection. The highlights/lowlights are ever-evolving/devolving, so expect the unexpected. Past pieces include a machine that turns food into feces, a teen suicide bomber's exploded remains cast in chocolate, and others whose titles are too vulgar to mention. No stuffy wall plaques here.

While MONA's not for the faint of heart, we detect signs of a slightly compassionate soul lurking within. The museum guide features a map showing how to dodge strobe lights and sexually explicit and potentially confronting artwork, disclosing which are appropriate for kids under 15. Of course, just like The Happiest Place on Earth, you can grab souvenirs at a gift shop. According to its curators, "there's all sorts of (expletive)" in there.

      Underground art scene…literally

MONA's home could be as surprising as the works it exhibits. Street level, the structure seems dominated by its surroundings. Inside, though, a spiral staircase descends into three floors of a subterranean architectural masterpiece with dim, windowless galleries. Walsh deliberately decided to create a foreboding atmosphere, wanting the building to "sneak up on visitors" and strike "a sense of danger." Delirium accomplished.
