About this Hobart Tour
As a bygone-days buff, you arewellaware that Britain's penal colonies played a heavy part in Australia's past. But did you know that from 1788 to 1868, 162,000 or so convicts settledthe place (and kept domestic prisons from overcrowding), when sending them to North America stopped after the Revolutionary War defeat? Then dubbed Van Diemen's Land, Tasmania was no exception.
Given the well-preserved, Georgian- and Victorian-era architecture, there seems to be no escaping reminders of its notorious reputation. But what has haunted locals now echoes in a heritage-rich destination for global visitors. And really, times have changed. Unease over this so-called "stain" has given way to pride, since somany former, hardworking convicts rose to prominence and shaped the nation's population and distinctive character.
Over half of the country's 25,000 female convicts were brought to this island. A majority, some with children, spent genuinely hard time at Cascades Female Factory. At this archaeological site, witness what was a harsh workhouse, prison, hiring depot, shelter, and hope for reforming wives, mothers, and servants, in a locale where men outnumbered women, ten to one. It's a sorry tale, but one that's crucial in any regional telling.
On other stops, you'll also dig up the city's past while looking forward to its rosy future. Discover how an ex-convict and his wife rapidly cultivated a rough bush block he was granted into a fruitful farm…and how it sprouted into today's prestigious, popular Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. Truly, all of Hobart is fertile ground for exploring antiquity. On this GoBe tour, prepare yourself to turn up nearly every root.
