About this Hobart Tour
Hobart's modern history begins in 1803 as the first British penal colony in Tasmania, then named "Van Diemen's Land." Given the notorious nature of this city's storied past, it's a fitting tribute that you're breaking in by the best likely scheme. Wholeheartedly. Flexing your freedom to travel its vibrant streets, lined with preserved, Georgian- and Victorian-era styled architecture. Enjoy whatever you like, wherever you like, for as long as you like.
Walk the archaeological ruins of the Cascades Female Factory, a grim 19th-century workhouse, prison, hiring depot, and shelter for many of the 25,000 women convicts taken to this island…and their children. Reflect on three serene acres of "Woodstock" gardens, rooted in 1827 to halt development near the site. They hug the Mount Wellington foothills, alive with flowers, rare flora, and a rippling creek.
On tap since 1824, the castle-like Cascade Brewery next door remains the country's oldest. Pop in for a tour of this sawmill-turned-sudsy-draft-icon, then belly up to its bar for a real taste of history: in this case, the region's unrivaled range of fresh beers and boozy ciders. Be sure to ask the brewers you meet about that little something they call "The Feel."
One of the world's finest deepwater ports, Hobart lures both mariners and holidaymakers. Flock the waterfront for fish and chips from floating, Constitution Dock-side punts. Try Salamanca Place cafes and shops, in old grain, wool, and whale oil warehouses. Or climb Kelly's Steps to Battery Point's vintage "Cornish fishing village" cottages and green, the quaint result of residents homesick for English soil. The choice is yours.
We're guessing there's no shuffleboard
You can't escape mention of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. This annual event is one of the world's toughest. A source of pride since it began in 1945, it's a testament to the hardy Aussies. What was meant to be a fun cruise became a grueling, 630-nautical-mile epic in oft-stormy weather. About 100+ vessels race, and it's taken over 11 days. It ends with champagne in Sullivan's Cove, where migrant forefathers first came ashore. We'll toast to that.
