About this Hobart Tour
Blessed with a beautiful deep water port and surrounded by majestic jagged peaks, Hobart was the ideal settlement to establish the new British colony of Tasmania. Of course, it had dubious beginnings as an island-wide penal colony once called Van Diemen's Land. As part of their sentence, convicts labored to build structures familiar to the free settlers who also arrived in this unspoiled land.
With such a varied populace, Hobart definitely had its share of villains and heroes. Just because some were in the upper class, the government, or the clergy, they weren't necessarily the good guys. Likewise, not all the cons were bad. But that's just part of the story and the secrets you'll discover on this popular walking tour of Tasmania's largest city and Australia's second oldest state capital.
Start along the original waterfront, where British convicts came ashore on this open-land prison. Follow your guide, who will keep you delighted and spellbound with stories of how this town grew on the toils of its incarcerated laborers and both conniving and upstanding citizens. Tour the Henry Jones IXL jam factory, the only Georgian community in Australia, and the dazzling Salamanca area.
While things have changed a lot in Hobart, you'll discover why its enduring legacy remains captivating to historians and visitors who come to Tasmania. After all, underwent quite a miraculous transformation from one of the most notorious places in the British Empire to the enchanting port city of today.
Escaping into the bush
Convicts held on Tasmania weren't penned up in tiny cells. Oh no, they were treated as slave laborers as they served out their sentences. Working in grueling conditions, many tried to escape but found the Australian wilderness, or bush, even tougher. The few who did were called bushrangers. The most famous of these was Martin Cash, who eventually became trustee and constable on nearby Norfolk Island. Guess you could say that he "cash"ed in.
