About this Hobart Tour
Walking around the Richmond neighborhood is very much like stepping back in time to the mid-19th century. Many of the Georgian-style buildings have remained unchanged since they were first constructed and inhabited, save for some necessary restoration. Look past the facade of the modern shops, restaurants, and businesses, and you'll glimpse Australia's colonial beginnings.
On this wide-ranging tour of Hobart's neighboring town, you'll take return transport that brings you into the heart of this popular visitor destination. A knowledgeable guide will entertain and educate you on Richmond's fascinating history as you walk through its streets, which strongly resemble villages back in England, Scotland, and Ireland. This is no surprise, as these are the lands the colonists left behind for their new lives here.
Witness the still-harsh conditions of the Richmond Gaol, the country's lone fully standing colonial prison, as you're surrounded by its dim stone cell walls. Photograph the graceful Richmond Bridge, built with study stones in 1825 by those same convicts brought here long ago. You will also have plenty of time to shop in the unique businesses or embark on an extended historical tour with your guide.
Finally, you'll cap off your tour with a visit to the Coal Valley Vineyard, famous for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling varietals. Choose an optional wine tasting and gaze out over the rolling rows of vines, pristine landscape, and the ocean shores. Savor a delicious, freshly prepared lunch from the winery's Cellar Door Restaurant, paired with your favorite wine, before heading back to Hobart.
You've got to pick a pocket or two
Isaac 'Ikey' Solomon was an English thief who became exceptionally adept at receiving stolen property and escaping arrest. After eluding authorities in both England and Tasmania, he was arrested and brought back to England. Ikey was finally convicted and sent back to Tasmania to serve out the remainder of his life in the Richmond Gaol. His trial was so notorious that he is thought to have inspired Charles Dickens to create the character Fagin, the evil antagonist so richly depicted in Oliver Twist.
