About this Hobart Tour
A place that seems so pristine, it's positively primeval. Soak up adventure in southern Tasmania, hugging the rugged coastline of Tasman National Park, between Eaglehawk Neck (the slim isthmus linking the Tasman Peninsula with the mainland) and Port Arthur (a historic convict settlement and one of Australia's most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites). Round Tasman Island, the oval plateau floating in the Tasman Sea.
Gawk in awe during your close encounter with Cape Pillar, the Southern Hemisphere's highest vertical sea cliffs. That's about 1,000 feet of dwarfing, Jurassic dolerite! Curious to discover intriguingly named Cathedral Rock, Totem Pole, and Candlestick? Whip out your camera, and marvel at those towering sea stacks. Explore colossal rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and amazing arches and chasms. Glide in and out of deep-sea caves.
It's a far-flung locale, but you're hardly riding solo. Feel at one with the environment in a natural playground abounding with wildlife. Maybe meet a cavalcade of dolphins, surfing the bow wave of your boat. Watch for whale pods racing alongside. Catch hundreds of seals cavorting on rocks. Thousands of gannets, albatross, and sea eagles fly with you, wheeling on the wind, diving for dinner. Cormorants and peregrine falcons nest in cliffs.
Lest you think this feeding frenzy is only for the seabirds, be assured you'll swoop onto the peninsula for edibles of your own. Linger awhile to consume the sights, as your local crew shares bits about the ancient Pydairrerme who lived here, its timber, shipbuilding, and fishing heritage, its current towns, and ongoing efforts to save endangered indigenous animals, such as the famously feisty Tasmanian devils who call it home. Naturally.
Needless to say, it's sun-powered today
One sign of civilization on Tasman Island is its isolated 1906 lighthouse. So perilous for keepers, who used pigeons to relay urgent messages, it was tough to keep their cottages full. Supplies were lugged from ship to launch to wire-suspended conveyor (or "flying fox") to ledge to winch to horse-drawn tram, lastly landing on 820-foot cliffs.
