About This Melbourne Tour
If there is one thing Melburnians love, it's sports and they are obsessed. The near-endless venues scattered in Olympic Park, Melbourne Park, and Yarra Park, collectively dubbed the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct, fuel that obsession.
Not surprisingly, many of the biggest domestic and international events are held in Melbourne’s Sports and Entertainment Precinct, where sports history runs deep. In fact, the 1956 Summer Olympics occurred here, the first time the games were held in the Southern Hemisphere and outside of North America and Europe. Sports fan or not you cant help but become infected by the spirit radiating from this athletic epicenter.
Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where "footy" (Australian Rules Football) and cricket are played. Subject to availability, you may be able to visit the Northern Stand, built to replace the old Olympics grandstand. You can check out the coach's box and the players' changing rooms or stand on hallowed turf and wander through the interactive, memorabilia-filled National Sports Museum. Located within the stadium, the museum features over 2,500 artifacts that host the greatest moments in Australia's sporting history.
From start to finish, it's your backstage pass to a sports-lover's paradise and a glimpse into the city's rich sporting traditions, patriotism and cultural heritage.
Coming in third…
As one of the worlds sports capitals, Melbourne offers lives and breathes sports– golf included. In fact, the country features the third-highest concentration of courses outside of Scotland and New Zealand, with terrain that varies from rivers to mountains and beaches. Best of all, an increasing number of golf courses have shifted from private to public. Fore!
