About this Sydney Tour
Hey, girl. Why not sidle on up next to Ryan Gosling and steal a kiss from that handsome heartthrob with those piercing blue eyes? Quick, this is your chance! After all, you're visiting Madame Tussauds, where the superstars hang out and full-contact hugs are welcomed with the price of admission. Wait, did he wink?
While they look so real that you'll be tempted to provoke a staring contest, these doppelgangers are "simply" wax figures fashioned from a painstaking labor of love. The museum employs a small army of expert sculptors, who spend more than 800 hours on each one. First, subjects are invited to sit in for over 250 precise measurements and photos. If they're too busy jet-setting or it's a posthumous portrayal, the sculptor relies on existing images.
After creating a clay model of the head and metal skeleton, the sculptors shape clay into the body, padding on an extra 2% in size to account for wax shrinkage. They construct a mold and pour a hot wax mixture inside, leaving it to cool and harden. Then, just like the real thing, the celeb gets a proper primping in hair and makeup, teeth and eyes included. Here, the job can take a whopping five weeks of inserting each hair strand. And finally, it's showtime!
Share the spotlight with beloved performers, athletes, politicians, royalty, and fictional characters. Savor your 15 minutes of fame in engaging, hands-on scenarios laden with fun props. In the A-List Party area, mingle with Johnny Depp and pop star P!nk. The likes of Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson, Barack Obama and Mahatma Gandhi, and E.T., Spider-Man, and Lady Gaga are holding up the velvet rope.
Marie Tussaud's life was more titillating than that of some museum subjects. In 1777, at age 16, she modeled Voltaire, her first wax sculpture. As art tutor to King Louis XVI's sister, she lived inVersailles. Imprisoned during the Reign of Terror, she was forced to prove loyalty to the French Revolution by making death masks from guillotined heads of nobles…and old bosses, the King and Queen. Voila! Her radical spectacle was on a roll.
