      About This Sydney Tour

Get ready to cruise into the iconic image of Sydney – and of Australia. This unforgettable tour takes in the fantastic sights around the harbor and gives you new insights into the heritage of this vibrant waterfront city.

The historic fortress in the harbor's center has seen it all. It was just a rocky island in 1788 when English convicts were confined here in leg irons and fed only bread and water. Its nickname from that time – "Pinchgut" – still endures. Eventually, the tower was built and the island was renamed Fort Denison in the late 1800s. The prisoners are long gone, and the menu has expanded – the fort now houses a restaurant and museum.

This stalwart fort witnessed the development of modern Sydney. The Harbour Bridge opened in 1932, and it's still the world's tallest steel arch bridge, measuring almost 450 feet from the water to its peak. (The locals call it "The Coathanger," and we doubt you'll need your cap'n to explain that nickname.) You'll see amazing views of the Sydney Opera House, opened in 1973 after much controversy and cost overruns. All that seems to be forgotten now that it's recognized as one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings.

As your captain docks at the market, get ready for a change of pace. You're about to become part of the exciting commotion of an authentic, working fish market, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Delight in the sights and smells of this massive market – the seafood stalls, fruit and vegetable markets, bakery, sushi bar, and delis. After a delicious lunch, jump back on board and just relax. You won't be feeling any Pinchgut.

Plenty of fish in the market

Up to 100 species of sustainable Australian seafood are traded at the Fish Market every day, adding up to almost 15,000 tons a year. All things seafood are also taught here. More than 13,000 people a year take classes from some of Australia's top chefs at the stylish onsite cooking school. Seafood BBQ is the most popular class, taught many times a month. We bet those Aussie chefs know the best ways to throw shrimp on the barbie.
