About This Sydney Tour
The simple act of peeling an orange helped inspire the famous Sydney Opera House. After Jorn Utzon's imaginative design won the commission in 1957, its complexity presented engineering challenges. Utzon himself solved them 1961. Peeling an orange, he thought of a way to modify his original design with 14 "sails" (or "shells") that, if combined, would form a perfect sphere. A beautiful and new solution.
Inspiration blew in from many directions for Utzon. After attending the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. During his travels, he was entranced with Morocco's architecture, Mayan structures that stretched skyward, the Chinese desire for harmony, and the artful Japanese blend of interior and exterior spaces.
All those inspirations live and breathe in his Opera House today. You'll hear the story this building tells. Admire the soaring ceilings in one of the world's largest pillar-free chambers. Take a restful seat on an elegant white birch timber chair. Run your fingers over the surface of the famous shell tiles. The whole of the design feels harmonious, and it inevitably shares Utzon's muses with all who experience his masterpiece.
The Opera House plays a leading role in the country's creative heritage and attracts the world's leading performers to its stages – and to its kitchens. After your tour, you'll enjoy an exquisitely prepared tasting plate that showcases the chefs' talents and Australia's abundant natural pantry. This tour is an inspiring show with a delicious encore.
This opera house had its phantom
After cost overruns and schedule delays led to Utzon's resignation from the Sydney Opera House project, the role of completing the design went to an Australian architect, Peter Hall, in 1966. When he stepped in, many details were unresolved, yet over the next six years, he managed to guide it to the grand opening. The story of completing the opera house is detailed in an aptly name book: Peter Hall: the Phantom of the Opera House.
Please make your way to the Sydney Opera House and the opera house "tour" check in area.
