About this Sydney Tour
Going on a walkabout in Australia usually refers to a rite of passage within the aboriginal community, where young men utilize their survival skills to live in the wild for a period of time. The WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo has recreated many of these iconic habitats, including the outback, rainforest, and bush environments, where you can walk about the grounds to get up close and personal with the diverse wildlife and unique ecosystems that support these creatures.
This includes tropical environments like the Daintree Rainforest, where Princess, the (male) Southern Cassowary, holds court, delighting visitors and keeping the staff on their toes with his in-your-face nature. (They don't call the Cassowary the "World's Deadliest Bird" for nothing.) Then there's the Butterfly Tropics, where vivid green tree pythons, frogs, turtles, and of course brightly colored butterflies slither, hop, crawl, or flit about the lush foliage as the spirit moves them.
Over in the cooler, drier Gum Tree Valley, you'll find a crew of cuddly koalas who hang from the trees and snack all day on their fragrant leaves. You'll also discover various snakes, lizards, and birds, including the delightfully named kookaburra with its distinctive laughing call. And don't miss Wallaby Cliffs, where yellow-footed rock wallabies, blotched blue tongue lizards, wombats, quokkas, and other curious creatures hang out in South Australia-inspired terrain.
The best part of your visit to WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo may be the many chances you and your family will have for close encounters with our animals, including the koalas, pythons, echidnas, Princess the Southern Cassowary, and more. Unlike a real walkabout though, there's no danger and no survival skills required. Just a day of delight in these unique creatures and the endlessly fascinating world in which they live.
For a carnivorous animal the size of a small dog, the Tasmanian devil has got quite the notorious reputation. Early European settlers nicknamed the cantankerous creature after witnessing its maniacal, hair-trigger disposition, a temperament immortalized more recently by Taz, that whirling dervish of a Looney Tunes cartoon character. If you see them in the wild, keep your distance, but by all means, stop by the Devil's Den for a peek at this legend!
