About This Auckland Tour
Discover lively Auckland, a distinct city on New Zealand’s North Island Marked by volcanic fields, it features explosion craters (maars), scoria cones, and tuff rings. Known for its Polynesian flair and natural wonders, it brims with lush native bush, plummeting waterfalls, and picturesque hiking trails. And then there's the city.
Walk along boutique-lined Queen Street in the heart of Auckland's center, where you may pause for a bite or glass of vino. Stop back later to attend a play or see a live show. Witness shimmering Viaduct Harbour and the verdant, historic Auckland Domain and Wintergardens, home to the Tropical House and non-heated Temperate House, ornate courtyard and sunken pond. Pause for tea and soak up historic architecture in Parnell Village, a charming historic village that makes for great boutique shopping.
Coastal Tamaki Drive gives way to panoramic Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park, named for a respected New Zealand prime minister. This is a perfect spot for taking photos or lounging beneath a sprawling Pohutukawa tree.
Not to be overlooked is Sky Tower, looming 1,076 feet above the city's glittering harbor. Feeling adventurous? Try out Sky Jump where you can leap this tall building in a single bound (attached by wires, of course), or SkyWalk, where you can inch along a narrow walkway 630 feet in the air with no handrails. How's that for an adrenaline rush?
Whatever you’re preference, a range of awe-inspiring experiences are waiting to be had in and around this memorable Maori metropolis.
Flight of fancy…
From 1897 into the early 20th century, the pigeon post house was used as a pigeon-carrier postal service. One of the very last carrier pigeons lines went directly to Auckland from nearby Great Barrier Island. Today, pigeons still play a pivotal role in Auckland society: pigeon-gram stamps are a valuable collectible, and the Pigeon Racing New Zealand society operates upwards of 36 member clubs dedicated to racing these feathered friends.
