About This Napier Tour
Hawke's Bay diversity is on full display with a sweeping tour capturing all the area has to offer. Your adventure begins by cruising along a coast lined with majestic Norfolk Island Pines, first planted in 1888. These soaring evergreens flank the Marine Parade, a landscaped lush area of walking paths and gardens housing a multitude of cultural attractions.
As you reach the seaport city of Napier, you'll marvel at the decorative and colorful buildings designed in the Art Deco style of the 1930s. After a devastating earthquake in 1931, the city underwent an amazing rebirth and is now one of the best-preserved Art Deco towns in the world.
From coastal city to sprawling countryside, Hawke's Bay offers a different perspective. Its fertile Haretaunga Plains are abundant with orchards and market gardens. The Mediterranean-like climate in this part of the country produces a cornucopia of tasty treasures. Its mild weather is conducive to growing fresh fruits and vegetables. The pleasant temps are also advantageous for vineyards and the region is renowned for winemaking. Experience that for yourself with a tasting and lunch at the acclaimed Selini Estates Winery.
Round out your orientation of the bay area with a stop in Hastings, Napier's "twin city" located about 11 miles inland. One of the largest urban areas in Hawke's Bay, Hastings is known for food production as it is surrounded by fertile land. A treat at New Zealand's oldest ice cream maker, Rush Munro's, will make you a believer in the quality of its locally sourced ingredients.
Hawke's Bay is a potpourri of contrasting landscapes and epicurean abundance, making it a unique, untapped treasure on the North Island of New Zealand.
Legend of the "Sleeping Giant"
The Maori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand who have a rich culture with their own language, traditions, and legends. Like the one of Te Mata Peak. It is believed that an ancient Maori chief fell in love with the daughter of his rival. To prove his worthiness, he was challenged with impossible tasks, including eating his way through the rocky range. He choked (literally) and the peak is said to be the outline of his body, aptly called the "Sleeping Giant."
