About This Napier Tour
New Zealand's best-kept secrets can be found in Hawke's Bay on the east coast of the country's North Island. And many of those secrets are delicious.
The Mediterranean-like climate in this part of the country produces a cornucopia of tasty treasures. Its mild weather is conducive to growing fresh fruits and vegetables like you'll find at the Strawberry Patch. The pleasant temps are also advantageous for vineyards. Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's oldest wine region, producing award-winning wines for over a century. Three decadent, hand-made treats complete your tasting tour at the Silky Oak Chocolate Company. Lucky you – this area is renowned for a wide variety of artisan producers.
The region holds a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The seaport city of Napier on Hawke's Bay underwent an amazing rebirth after a devastating earthquake in 1931. Rebuilding itself in the popular Art Deco style of the 1930s, and with restoration through the decades, the city is one of the best-preserved Art Deco towns in the world.
So sit back, enjoy the ride, and let Hawke's Bay's secrets unfold before you as you taste and sip the offerings from this bountiful land.
Out of the rubble, a city is reborn
A massive earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale levelled the seaport city of Napier on February 3, 1931. Most of the buildings in the town center were destroyed and hundreds of lives were lost. But Napier didn't stay down for long. Decorative buildings were erected with bold geometric shapes in the modern style distinct to Art Deco.
