About This Wellington Tour
A founding member of the United Nations, New Zealand is a small state with a strong interest in peace. Channel this peace from the top of picturesque Mount Victoria as you scan the scenery for the Byzantine-style domed Greek Orthodox Cathedral, historic St. Gerard's Church and Monastery, and lovely Old St. Paul's Cathedral, which was constructed from native timber and has unforgettable stained glass windows.
As you explore "Windy Wellington," the world's southernmost capital city and a designated Peace Capital, enjoy the architecturally diverse collection of Parliament buildings where this country's innovative social policies are furthered. There's the neoclassical Parliament House, the gothic revival Parliamentary Library (the oldest building in the complex), and the skep-shaped Executive Building.
To feel like a real Kiwi, take the Wellington Cable Car – a funicular railway dating from 1902. As you ride it, you'll climb 394 feet over a length of 2,008 ft. up to suburban, hilltop Kelburn, home to galleries, craft shops, cafes, and restaurants. Meander through the Wellington Botanic Garden, with its sweeping city and harbor views. Traipse through the native forest and the poppy fields and into the Begonia House, where water gardens set a tranquil tone. Don't miss the Peace Garden, home to the Hiroshima Peace Flame, lit by the fires of the atomic bomb and presented by Japan to New Zealand for its work against nuclear weapons.
From its striking harbor to its houses of government and the varied architecture of its historic buildings, you'll have no beef with Wellington.
What's all the buzz about?
Rumors suggest that Wellington's iconic, 236-foot Parliament building – known as the Beehive – was actually sketched on a napkin or drawn on a cigarette pack as a joke. Be that as it may, the building – built in stages between 1969 and 1979 – resembles a woven beehive called a skep. It is occupied by the Cabinet, with the Prime Minister's offices situated on its ninth floor.
