About This Wellington Tour
Discover "Windy Wellington," New Zealand's capital city on Cook Strait. A political center at the tip of North Island, it houses the neoclassical Parliament building and the Supreme Court of New Zealand. However, the world's southernmost capital city is also at the epicenter of film production. There – in the heart of Middle-earth – the magic of moviemaking comes to life.
Dotted with film locations and celebrity haunts, it's also a place to absorb views of wooden cottages, the snow-capped Kaikoura Ranges, and golden Kapiti Coast beaches from atop pretty Mount Victoria. Blockbuster scenery aside, the Byzantine-style Greek Orthodox Cathedral and Old St. Paul's Cathedral – built from native timber and offset by brilliant stained glass windows – should hardly be ignored.
Take the Wellington Cable Car up to the hilltop suburb of Kelburn to peruse galleries and craft shops or pause for a coffee in a cafe. Further upward, find the Wellington Botanic Garden, its panoramic city and harbor views exist solely to provide you with a splendid backdrop for lunch. Stroll through its conifer-dotted native forest and the poppy fields and into the Begonia house.
Visit Weta Cave Workshop, a lauded special effects and prop company. A guided tour affords glimpses into the creative process, plus weapons and collectibles created for films. Nearby, the historic Embassy Theatre hosts premieres, drawing movie buffs from all corners of the globe.
Whether you're taking in views of the waterfront and green hillsides or unearthing secrets behind your favorite films, this harbor capital has it all…my Precious.
Weta's in a name?
When Richard Leslie Taylor and Tania Rodger founded their modest model and prop company in 1987, they called it RT Effects, for obvious reasons. Eight years later, they partnered with Peter Jackson and Jamie Selkirk and formed Weta Workshop. What's a weta? No, it's not a creature from Middle-earth – it's actually a large, brown, wingless, and prickly pre-historic grasshopper-like creature found only in New Zealand.
