About this Bahia de Salvador tour
The country with the largest rainforest in the world has become keenly aware of the importance of protecting its endangered species, and this tour takes you to a wildlife refuge that has been highly successful in protecting sea turtles and their habitats.
Before the Tamar Project created a place where sea turtles to nest and live in peace, Brazilian fishermen armed with machetes would patrol beaches up and down the coast and slaughter the unsuspecting sea creatures, eating the meat and eggs and selling the shells as souvenirs. But in the late 1970s, a group of students created Project Tamar (from the Portuguese for "sea turtle") in Praia do Forte, and it became one of Brazil's most popular eco-destinations.
Over the past 30 years, more than 15 million hatchlings, representing five different sea turtle species, have been released into coastal waters. On this tour you'll see them shuffling over the sand and swimming in 600,000-gallon saltwater tanks, and learn more about Tamar's research and conservation programs.
Thanks to Tamar, sea turtle sightings on the beach at Praia do Forte are increasingly common, and you might even see some at Guarajuba Beach. Thanks to Tamar, they've come out of their shell.
Eco-luxury is the new eco-tourism
When the Tamar Project's researchers first came to Praia do Forte in 1981, the tiny town was a small fishing village of about 500, with no electricity. It's changed quite a bit since then, while maintaining its ties to nature; today, eco-friendly hiking trails and protected beaches mingle with stylish restaurants and high-end shopping, with soothingly warm tidal pools.
