About This Fortaleza Tour
Morro Branco is one of Brazil's natural wonders, known for: the beautiful red cliffs that overlook the white-sand beach and blue ocean below, and the labyrinths and grottos where twelve different colors of sand can be found.
Millions of years ago, the multicolored dunes of Morro Branco were baked by the sun, creating colorful canyons called falesias. Prolonged water erosion sculpted a labyrinthine maze through the cliffs, bringing forth an epic Martian landscape at one of the most beautiful beaches on Earth.
The cliffs today create a splendid backdrop for the coastline, and while they look red from a distance, you'll discover that they contain several other hues: cream, pink, and beige, all combining to create the unique color of the cliffs.
A venture into the labyrinth reveals a new maze of man-made tunnels leading to beaches with 12 different colors of sand found there, including pinks, oranges, yellows and purples. They're used by local artists use to create sand "paintings" inside bottles – which, as you'll see, requires a great deal of skill and precision.
If you hire a guide to walk you through the labyrinth, you'll probably hear some tall tales about how the cliffs and the canyons were formed. You may also hear about movies and TV shows made here, including the Brazilian version of the Amazing Race and the award-winning British travel show Globe Trekker. And now you'll have your own amazing trek.
Painting with sand
Watching a Morro Branco artist create a sand painting in a bottle is almost entrancing. Using a variety of funnels, scoops, wires and wands, these skilled craftsmen demonstrate amazing dexterity and vision. The techniques are handed down from generation to generation. Among the many designs you'll find are landscapes and underwater scenes, intricate native patterns, flower motifs, and eerily realistic-looking animals.
