Scenic Drive to Florianopolis, Walking Tour, and Joaquina Beach

      Itajai, Brazil
From (USD) $167 Per Person (Based on 2)
      Highlights
      • Florianopolis walking tour: Your guide will lead you through the bustling state capital to the 18th-century Metropolitan Cathedral, the Old Customs House, and the lively Municipal Market.
      • Museum of History: Sure, it's a museum filled with artifacts that trace the history of Brazil and Florianopolis, but architecture buffs will also find it drool worthy. The eclectic architecture runs from Baroque to neoclassical, with figures inspired by Greco-Roman mythology on the roof parapets, Carrara marble staircases, iron skylights, frescoes, and intricate designs on the floors.
      • Conceicao Lagoon and Joaquina Beach: So much to do and see. Stunning water and mountain views, endless watersports in which to indulge, and tons of restaurants, bars, and shops to patronize plus some free time to enjoy your choice of activities.
      About this Itajai tour

Its name sounds a little like an ancient Greek city, but Florianopolis is an entirely cosmopolitan and thoroughly Brazilian metropolis. Floripa, as it's known to the locals, is a little like the Spanish island of Ibiza: a jet-set destination known for its all-night parties, miles and miles of stunning beaches, and quaint fishing villages. Unlike Ibiza, Florianopolis is located not just on an island, but also spills over onto the mainland. And it's one of the most dynamic cities in the world (according to Newsweek), and one of the best places to live in Brazil.

But behind its party town reputation, there's the depth you'd expect of a city with a fair amount of history. Its Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the city's most beautiful buildings, dominating the northwest corner of Praça XV de Novembro, in the historic city center. Named after the date Brazil's monarchy was overthrown in 1889, the square is also where you'll find the Palace Cruz e Souza. Formerly the Governor's Palace, this was the staging ground for some pretty dramatic moments, hosting Brazilian emperors and fighting off revolutionaries. Today it's the Santa Catarina History Museum, but its magnificent interior alone is worth the trip, with ornate parquet floors and extravagant 19th-century ceilings.

The Municipal Market was built in the 19th century, and the only thing that's really changed is the shopkeepers and what they sell. The beautiful structure is home to 120 stalls (known as "boxes"), and in addition to fun bargains on everything from crafts to cooking staples, you'll also find bars, restaurants, and the stately neoclassical Customs House. Things have changed a bit over the years, as today the customs revolve primarily around, eating, drinking, and having a good time. Bon appetite!

When you wish upon a tree

Forget dating websites. If you're looking to change your marital status, try heading to the Praça XV de Novembro. At its center is a massive, 140-year-old fig tree said to hold magical powers. Circle it clockwise three times; you'll soon be married. Go counterclockwise seven times, and divorce is imminent. Hanging upside down from its branches is a shortcut to widowhood. Try it and see but only if you're truly desperate.
