A Half-Day at Boa Viagem Beach
- Shopping in prison: Before it became a shopping center, the Casa da Cultura (House of Culture) was a colonial-era prison. Old cells have been transformed into craft shops, bookstores, and cafes. The patio even serves as a concert hall.
- Chilling on the sand: When in Brazil, do as the Brazilians do and go bake yourself on the beach. There's no better way to enjoy the scenery.
- Noshing from your beach chair: If you get hungry or thirsty, simply grab some snacks, or just catch the eye of the vendor walking past – he delivers.
About this Recife tour
The people of Recife really want you to have a bon voyage while you're there. They've named a whole district to let you know as much. Boa Viagem ("good trip") is one of the city's glitziest neighborhoods, and it happens to be the location of what's been referred to as one of the world's best urban beaches.
And urban it is: Boa Viagem beach is literally lined by skyscrapers on one side, and sparkling blue Atlantic Ocean on the other. Offshore, a barrier or recifes ("reefs") protect the shore, creating a natural swimming pool. So go ahead and stick your foot in – heck go all the way in!
A pedestrian walkway is where you'll find little huts selling food and drink – but you don't have to leave your chair to get your fill of food or shopping. The vendors will come right to you. The agua de coco (coconut water) is a local favorite … not to mention a worldwide health trend.
And if you have any desire to leave the beach and venture into the neighborhood, go for it. You'll find cafes, restaurants, bars, upscale shops … everything you'd expect to find in a metropolis. Only this city practically spills itself into the ocean, so it offers the best of everything needed for a boa viagem.
Swimming with the sharks
In addition to the vendors, sunbathers, and skyscrapers, you'll notice a LOT of signs at water's edge warning of sharks. Yes, Boa Viagem's beach IS listed as one of the Top 10 Shark Infested Beaches in the world. Some of the locals think the problem started after they built the nearby port. But others will tell you that, as long as you don't swim past the reef, you'll walk away without a single shark bite.
