About this Arica tour
Get familiar with the sights at one of the most notable stretches of the world's longest mountain chain. On this tour, you'll drive up into the Andes to an elevated area known as the Chilean Altiplano, stopping at several points of interest along the way.
The reflection of the Parinacota Volcano in the majestic waters of Lake Chungara will take your breath away. This volcano is a semi-active one; a collapse on the western side 8,000 years ago formed the dam that created the lake.
Another beautiful natural structure is the Quebrada de Cardones ravine, the only place in Chile where you can find a cactus. The ones here are formidable: candelabra cacti can grow to be five feet tall. The Quebrada de Cardones is also home to a surprisingly large array of birds and reptiles, considering its close proximity to the Atacama Desert, one of the driest in the world.
To get a taste of the native culture as you ascend higher and higher into the Andes, you'll visit to the villages of Putre and Parinacota. After lunch at Putre, visit an ancient church in Parinacota originally erected nearly four centuries ago. If you start feeling the effects of the altitude, don't shy away from the coca tea: though it does have traces of the coca alkaloid that is also found in cocaine, it's also one of the most widely-prescribed methods of treating altitude sickness in the Andes. From gorgeous views of the land to exciting historical villages, take in a side of South America that you've only seen in magazine pictures.
The World's Deadliestandhellip;Table?
That's right: Inside the Parinacota Church is allegedly one of the area's biggest killers: a wooden table. As the native story goes, the table made its way to the front of a villager's house one night andndash; soon after, the man perished. To prevent more people from falling victim to this murderous piece of furniture, the table is now chained to a wall inside the church.
