About This Puerto Montt Tour
Bordered by two snow-peaked volcanoes and idyllic villages seemingly transported from the Bavarian Alps, Chile's second-largest lake offers breathtaking panoramas of uncommon beauty. But this is a country that knows a dash of tragedy only heightens the joys of life, and the Mapuche legend of Lake Llanquihue makes Juliet and her Romeo look lucky.
This tale of smoldering love begins at the foot of the Osorno volcano, where handsome general Quitralpique meets lovely maiden Licarayen. The two were instantly entranced, and vowed to marry in the spring. But not everyone shared the bliss of their young love.
Pirepillen, an evil spirit imprisoned in the volcano, erupted in a jealous, fiery fury that rocked lakeside villages with earthquakes and buried them under spewing lava. Only one thing would appease his hellish wrath: the pure heart of young Licarayen. Thinking only of her people, she agreed to Pirepillen's terms – but added one of her own. Her heart belonged to her gallant betrothed, she proclaimed, so only he could carve it out. When Quitralpique gallantly complied, a giant condor swooped down and devoured the virgin heart, then ascended skyward and dove into Osorno's belching crater.
The grieving warrior watched as pure white snow began to fall – the virtuous soul of Licarayen – and threw himself chest-first onto his spear. The hearts of the doomed lovers were again united. But the snow kept falling for a year, melting over the volcanic furnace until it had filled Lake Llanquiehue.
In reality, the only carving involved was done about 12,000 years ago, when glaciers gouged a 1,000-foot hole and melted into it, leaving the vast expanse of stunning blue you'll see on this tour. But villages still hug the lakeshore, and Osorno still towers above them. It's a sight that steals hearts.
The princess and the palace
Princess Licarayen was the daughter of the Mapuche chief, and was laid to rest on a bed of the most beautiful flowers her forlorn fiance could find. They took root and grew into a densely intertwined palace of flowers and ferns that, according to legend, is only visible to someone attuned to nature's beauty. If you are, look for it in Puerto Varas, the "City of Roses."
