About this Valparaiso tour
This guided tour can best be described with one word: monumental. You'll embark on a revealing journey that will take you to the plazas, palaces, historic buildings, and monuments of three distinctive Chilean cities. All in one day.
There are probably Chilean natives who haven't seen everything you will see. By the time you're finished, you'll have absorbed the "anything goes" attitude of Valparaiso, the tranquil elegance of Vina del Mar , the stunning beauty of Casablanca Valley, and the cultural sophistication of Santiago, the bustling capital.
One of the high points of the tour comes in Santiago, where you'll visit Chile's most celebrated structure, La Moneda Palace. Looking at it today, you almost wouldn't know that large sections were destroyed in an air bombardment during a 1973 coup that ousted then-president Salvador Allende and installed General Augusto Pinochet, head of a military junta that ruled the country until 1988. But your guide will show you bullet holes that were left unrepaired as reminders of the coup and the dark years that followed.
It's interesting to note that, just as this tour begins in Valparaiso and culminates with your visit to La Moneda, the coup began with a naval blockade of Valparaiso and ended with the attack on La Moneda.
One tour, three cities, five centuries of history.
Chile's Camp David
On the hill overlooking the Floral Clock in Viandntilde;a del Mar stands the Cerro Castillo Palace, vacation retreat of Chilean presidents. It's also where the president-elect spends the night before being sworn in, as well as the setting for ministerial and diplomatic meetings. You'll know the president is there if the Chilean flag is flying at the entrance.
