About this Montevideo tour
A unique blend of modern vitality and old-school colonial flavor has helped make Montevideo one of Latin America's most livable cities. In much the same way, a fusion of modern technology and traditional techniques has brought Uruguayan wines into global prominence. This GoBe tour will bring you up to speed on all these developments andndash; and let you see, smell, and taste them for yourself.
On a drive through historic Ciudad Viejo (Old Town), you'll see Independence Square, Montevideo's signature centerpiece, and landmarks like the towering Palacio Salvo and the Legislative Palace, one of the world's most beautiful government buildings.
You'll visit the bustling Mercado del Puerto, with its asado (barbecue) restaurants and impressive wrought iron roof, the farmers market, home to fresh fruit and vegetables, traditional Uruguayan pastries, and other delicacies. In Parque Batlle, you'll see the stadium where the World Cup began, and along the coast pass beautiful beaches, exclusive neighborhoods, and a scenic viewpoint.
But all that's merely the appetizer to the entree of the day: your tour, tasting, and lunch at Bodega Bouza, a boutique winery where the limited-edition tannat reds (from Uruguay's signature grape) are winning international recognition. Modeled after a French chateau, this elegant compound comprises 25 acres of vineyard, a world-class antique car museum, and a gourmet restaurant.
After an informative tour of the grounds and processing rooms, and some drooling over the collection of sexy (and strange) classic autos, you'll taste selections from Bouza's range of reds and whites, accompanied by that meal we've been promising.
A big beef over soccer
Argentinian beef gets the limelight, but Uruguay's is equally prized by those in the know. Rivalry between these two superpowers of steak is mostly friendly, but not so when it comes to soccer, where the stakes are super high and the bad blood goes way back. Their 1930 World Cup final was played against a backdrop of death threats, with a terrified Belgian referee needing assurance that a fast getaway boat was waiting at game's end. Fortunately, he survived.
