About this Montevideo tour
Here's the perfect option for independent-minded travelers who want to see where South America's most beautiful people are heading. Punta de Este is the same sort of barefoot-casual millionaire-magnet as the Hamptons, St. Barts, St. Tropez, and South Beach but with a shot of unique Uruguayan style. And with long stretches of beaches made all the more scenic by occasional peninsulas, rocky points, and river inlets.
Jetsetters from everywhere flock there, especially in peak season between December and January, when the local population swells from around 15,000 to more than 250,000. Upwardly mobile Argentines and Brazilians share the scene with more than a few global celebs and the hoteliers, restaurateurs, gallery owners, and yacht brokers who cater to this rarified slice of beach-going public.
Punta sits on a narrow peninsula separating the Rio de la Plata from the Atlantic, and houses a mix of colonial and modern buildings. Hotels dominate the north end, residences the south. Gorlero Avenue is the main drag, where you'll find restaurants, shops, and a popular handicraft market at Artigas Square.
There are two large stretches of beach, the wild side (Brava) and the calm side (Mansa) andndash; each with their own color and texture of sand. Punta marina itself is an attraction, a busy hub of activity with fresh-caught seafood sold straight off the fishing boats and a raft of sea lions who lurk in the water waiting for tasty scraps tossed their way as the fisherman clean the day's catch.
But in the end, it's all about the beautiful people there. You'll fit right in.
Only an artist could have imagined this
The strange, gleaming-white structure you'll see imbedded in a Punta Ballena bluff is Casapueblo, an architectural work of art built by a man who was fiercely determined to obliterate the right angle from his life. Begun as a modest lodge in 1958, artist and musician Carlos Paez Vilaro gradually transformed his home and studio into the magnificently weird whitewashed stucco complex, which today hangs nine stories down a seaside cliff and looks like the bleached mud nest of a deranged bird. There are no straight lines.
