Shopping is available at the Papyrus Institutes and the oriental bazaars near the Pyramids of Giza. Local souvenirs, papyrus, cartouche pendants, cotton products can be purchased. In many shops, bargaining can get you a better price. Be aware that some vendors are very persistent. Many shops close between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The local currency is the Egyptian pound.

Entrance inside the Pyramids is not included in the tour; time permitting travelers can request to enter inside the Pyramids burial chambers at their own cost. This optional experience is not recommended if you suffer from claustrophobia or have back or knee issues.

As the final resting places of pharaohs and their consorts, Egypt's pyramids are probably the most elaborate mausoleums ever conceived. The legacy of these god-kings and queens is now yours to revere. Motor through the frenetic urban bustle of Cairo and lush, cultivated rural fields to Memphis, the country's ancient capital.

Wander the Temple of Ptah ruins, the fallen King Ramses II statue, and the alabaster Sphinx of Memphis, most likely of King Amenophis II. Discover Sakkara's necropolis – a fancy word for "really old cemetery." Actually step inside a mastaba, or tomb with sloping sides and a flat roof. Plus, witness the world's first monumental stone building, the Step Pyramid of King Zoser, built by influential engineer Imhotep nearly 5,000 years ago.

Journey onto the iconic Giza Plateau with its panoramic view of the most recognizable pyramid complexes, including the Great Pyramid, the only largely intact survivor of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Admire them at your own pace, walking around and even entering them (for an extra cost). Further down the valley, the Great Sphinx of Giza awaits. Stare up in awe and into the eyes of that mysterious guardian who watches the passage of time and man in eons of silence.

At the Papyrus Institute, observe the millennia-old art of creating paper from reeds. Unearth some classically cool souvenirs. It's not written in hieroglyphics, but the writing is on the proverbial wall – these memories are enough to last several afterlives.

      Dog days in the desert

In 2011, a team of researchers, led by Egyptologist Salima Ikram and British colleague Paul Nicholson, worked at the Sakkara necropolis. One of their routine excavations led to the discovery of more than eight-million mummified animals. Most were dogs, which were known to carry their owners' prayers and goodwill to their gods at the time of death.  Even Stephen King probably never dreamed a pet cemetery could be this massive.
